Losing Time is the 3rd song on Take it Forever, and it's another one that means alot to me. I was listening to a podcast with James Alex from the band Beach Slang earlier today (
www.ntwha.com/episode-88-james-alex-of-beach-slang/) and he was talking about how he came to his intensely positive outlook on the world as a deliberate decision, and how happiness is a choice you make. Losing Time is a meditation on a lot of things I've been through over the last few years. It's about the passing of time and the changes in how we relate to each other, and it's about creating your own narrative and place in the world. One line that always hits me hard when we play the song live is this one:
Even if it's not the life you dreamed about
Everything you did was worth it in the end
There are so many stories to share about this record. It was about a year ago now that my wife Liz and I had a holiday party at our place. Dan and Paul were there and we had a casual conversation about getting together and playing some music. We started playing in January, and this was one of the first songs we worked on. I had been writing songs for a while and working on recording in fits and starts, but suddenly in a friendly collaboration with those guys things started to find a direction.
I love that things started that way, and now less than a year later we have an album to show for it. I think most of my favorite music is made in a simillar relaxed sort of fashion, and it feels like such a privilege to be able to work that way. Dan and Paul brought really great parts to all these songs, and totally nailed it on this one. Also, did I mention that playing guitar solos is pretty much my favorite thing?
