about

this track originally came out as part of a special feature and digital 7" for the ampeater review. check it out here: ampeatermusic.com/aem090

I like the idea of trying to write a really simple song that can be useful to people and maybe inspire them in a direct sort of way. So many songs we hear these days are cloaked in multiple levels of irony. When you’re trying to write something that is universal, you sort of have to let go of the fear of being cliché. My wife Liz inspired this song pretty directly – there’s a line in it that says “there’s nothing for you going upstream.” That’s something we’ve been trying to practice. You have to be open to let life happen – when you’re struggling really hard, swimming against the tide, you may be going in the wrong direction.

lyrics

Well its high time
A windfall or a warning sign?
To get back to where you once belonged
And let go of your old mind

Its a good day
Stand up and face your fate
The hard times only made you strong
And its not too late

Verse
You're breaking your back but there's nothing for you going upstream Been working for your whole life You got lost in the wrong dream

And you're gonna fight, its what you learned to do your whole life Trying to get back overground And come up for a little light

And its high time
To look back on what you left behind
When you're pretending that there's nothing wrong
It wears you down to a thin line

your good friends
Are coming back around again
But you can't remember who you are
You wonder how that happened

Bridge
And now the days are getting longer
You're looking out across the sky
The clouds look just like dark ships closing in
So you pull back the shades and let them pass you by

Well its high time
A windfall or a warning sign?
To get back to where you once belonged
And let go of your old mind

Its a good day
Stand up and face your fate
The hard times only made you strong
And its not too late
